It’s great to be back here on the blog! I have fantastic news: I’ve just finished writing Book 2 of our “Sombras do Passado” series, which, as many of you know, is set in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro. This year, I had the wonderful opportunity to visit my family in Brazil and spend some time in Rio. It was incredible to reconnect with my roots, feel the energy of the cidade maravilhosa, and, of course, gather lots of inspiration to continue creating these stories that help you on your journey of learning Portuguese.
And speaking of Brazil and its cultural quirks, have you heard about a “joke” that recently took over the internet involving Brazil and Portugal? Get your coffee (or guaraná!) ready because today we’re talking about the curious case of “Guiana Brasileira”!
From “Fala, Galera!” to “Guiana Brasileira”: Understanding the Meme
It all started unexpectedly in November 2024. The FC Barcelona women’s football team announced the signing of Portuguese player Kika Nazareth and, to welcome her, used the greeting “Fala, galera!” on their social media. For those learning Brazilian Portuguese, “fala, galera!” is super common, a very informal and friendly way to greet a group.
However, some Portuguese internet users didn’t like it at all. They criticized the use of what they called a “brasileirismo” (Brazilianism), considering it disrespectful to European Portuguese. This reaction, in turn, didn’t go unnoticed by Brazilians online. Seeing the complaints as somewhat exaggerated or even a bit of a “superiority complex,” the response came in the best Brazilian style: with humor and satire!
The main idea was to flip history: what if, instead of Portugal colonizing Brazil, it was Brazil that “annexed” Portugal? Thus, the nickname “Guiana Brasileira” (Brazilian Guiana) was born to refer to Portugal, a joke that quickly went viral on platforms like TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram.
Why Did It Go Viral? Brazilian Creativity in Action!
The humor of the meme lies precisely in this role reversal, challenging centuries of history in a totally irreverent way. Furthermore, the joke touched on sensitive points in the Luso-Brazilian relationship, like the old “devolve o ouro” (“return the gold”) joke, referring to the wealth extracted during the colonial period.
Brazilian creativity exploded! Soon, other hilarious nicknames for Portugal emerged:
- Pernambuco em Pé (Pernambuco Standing/Upright): A reference to one of the richest and historically most important states in colonial Brazil.
- Faixa de Gajos (Strip of Guys): A pun combining “Faixa de Gaza” (Gaza Strip) with “gajo,” a common (sometimes slightly pejorative) slang term for a Portuguese man.
- Mato Grosso do Norte (North Mato Grosso): Geographically absurd, imagining a state from central-western Brazil in northern Europe.
- 28º estado brasileiro (28th Brazilian state): Directly incorporating Portugal into the Brazilian federation.
- Ilha de Camões (Island of Camões): Reducing the country of the great poet to just an island.
It went so far that AI-generated videos appeared showing Cristiano Ronaldo as a “candidate for governor” of Brazilian Guiana, and even fake edits on Google Maps and Wikipedia (which were quickly corrected, of course!).
How Did Portugal React? Between Laughter and Irritation
Across the Atlantic, reactions were mixed. Many Portuguese felt offended, considering the meme disrespectful to their culture, history, and national symbols. Comments like “this isn’t a joke” and criticism of the comparisons and name changes were common. Some linked the joke to the context of increased Brazilian immigration and a feeling that Brazilian culture was “invading” Portugal, or even to incidents of xenophobia against Brazilians.
However, not everyone took it badly. Some Portuguese found it funny, praised the creativity (especially the nickname “Faixa de Gajos”), and saw it as part of the “rivalry” and banter that has always existed between the two countries. Some argued that the best response was simply to ignore it to avoid giving the provocation more attention.
A Mirror of Luso-Brazilian Digital Culture
The “Guiana Brasileira” phenomenon is a fascinating (and somewhat controversial!) example of how the internet and memes have become a space to discuss history, cultural identity, and the complex relationships between Brazil and Portugal. It shows how humor can be used to subvert narratives, but also how it can be interpreted very differently depending on cultural context and individual sensitivities.

Tudo começou de forma inesperada em novembro de 2024. O time de futebol feminino do Barcelona anunciou a contratação da jogadora portuguesa Kika Nazareth e, para dar as boas-vindas, usou a saudação “Fala, galera!” em suas redes sociais. Para quem está aprendendo português do Brasil, “fala, galera!” é super comum, uma forma bem informal e amigável de cumprimentar um grupo.
Acontece que alguns internautas portugueses não gostaram nada disso. Eles criticaram o uso do que chamaram de “brasileirismo”, considerando um desrespeito ao português europeu. Essa reação, por sua vez, não passou despercebida pelos brasileiros na internet. Vendo as reclamações como um certo exagero ou até um pouco de “complexo de superioridade”, a resposta veio no melhor estilo brasileiro: com humor e sátira!

Houve portugueses que acharam graça, elogiaram a criatividade (especialmente o apelido “Faixa de Gajos”) e encararam como parte da “rivalidade” e das brincadeiras que sempre existiram entre os dois países. Alguns argumentaram que a melhor resposta seria simplesmente ignorar para não dar mais palco à provocação.
