Have you ever felt that beginner books are… a little boring? Stories that are too short, simplified sentences that no one uses in real life, and just when you finally start to get involved, the story ends. And there you go again, wasting time looking for the next study material.

I’ve been through that. When I was an A1-level German student, I dove into the books recommended for my level. The frustration was immense. The stories didn’t grab me, they didn’t challenge me, and honestly, they didn’t motivate me to continue.

It was this experience that inspired me to create something different for Portuguese students. What if, instead of jumping from one shallow tale to another, you could immerse yourself in a single, engaging story that takes you from your current level to the next?

Why a suspense novel (and not an “easy” book)?

I believe the best way to learn a language is through an interesting challenge. A material that hooks you, gives you a purpose to learn, and immerses you in the culture of the language.

The “Sombras do Passado” series was created with this exact motivation in mind:

• Cultural Immersion: Travel through Brazil’s main cities without leaving home. After exploring São Paulo in Book 1, it’s now time to uncover the mysteries of Rio de Janeiro with our protagonist, Chico.
• Suspense that Motivates: The suspenseful plot is designed to leave you eager for the next chapter. This desire to find out “what will happen next” becomes the perfect motivation to decode new words and phrases. You won’t just be studying; you’ll be solving a mystery!
• Learning with Joy: When learning is fun, it becomes effective. The goal is for you to learn Portuguese in the process, almost without noticing, while you enjoy a good story.
• REPETITION. A lot of words repeat in the books I write. So you will learn them for sure!

What’s New in Book 2: Sombras do Passado – Rio de Janeiro

In Book 1, “Sombras do Passado – São Paulo,” my focus was on using verbs in the present tense to make reading easier, but always with natural and useful sentence structures (none of those A1 sentences that nobody really speaks).

Now, in Book 2, the approach is a bit different and even more ambitious. The idea is to accompany you on a journey of evolution. The book has been structured to gradually increase in complexity:

• We Start Simple: The first chapters use shorter sentences and simpler vocabulary, something we could classify between the A2 and B1 levels.
• We Evolve Together: With each new chapter, the level of complexity increases. The sentences become more elaborate and the vocabulary richer, progressively taking you to the B2 and, by the end of the book, even the C1 level.

I lived this experience myself: I went from A1 to B1 in German with a single story, a B1-level book I decided to tackle from the beginning. Now, I want you to do the same with Portuguese. No matter what your level is today, my goal is to help you get to the next one with my books.

Tools for Your Success

I know that taking on a bigger challenge can seem daunting, but you won’t be alone! To ensure your journey is both fun and effective, the book is packed with support tools:

• Portuguese-English Glossary: At the end of each chapter, you’ll find a list of the least common words and their translations. You can use this list in three ways:
  1. Warm-up: Read the glossary before the chapter to familiarize yourself with the new vocabulary.
  2. Support: Consult the list during your reading whenever you encounter an unknown word.
  3. Review: Return to the glossary after reading to solidify what you’ve learned.
• Crossword Puzzles: To make reviewing more fun and challenging, each chapter ends with a crossword puzzle. It’s a great way to test your memory and ensure the new vocabulary really sticks.
• Anki Flashcards with Audio: And for those who take spaced repetition seriously, I also prepare Anki flashcard decks with all the vocabulary from the books, including audio for the correct pronunciation!

A novidade do Livro 2: Sombras do Passado – Rio de Janeiro

No Livro 1, “Sombras do Passado – São Paulo”, meu foco foi usar verbos no tempo presente para facilitar a leitura, mas sempre com estruturas de frases naturais e úteis (nada daquelas frases de nível A1 que ninguém realmente fala).

Agora, no Livro 2, a proposta é um pouco diferente e ainda mais ambiciosa. A ideia é te acompanhar em uma jornada de evolução. O livro foi estruturado para aumentar a complexidade de forma gradual:

• Começamos Simples: Os primeiros capítulos usam frases mais curtas e vocabulário mais simples, algo que poderíamos classificar entre os níveis A2 e B1.
• Evoluímos Juntos: A cada novo capítulo, o nível de complexidade aumenta. As sentenças ficam mais elaboradas e o vocabulário mais rico, te levando progressivamente para os níveis B2 e, ao final do livro, até mesmo C1.

Eu mesmo vivi essa experiência: saí do A1 para o B1 em alemão com uma única história, um livro do nível B1 que decidi encarar desde o início. Agora, eu quero que você faça o mesmo com o português. Não importa qual seja o seu nível hoje, meu objetivo é te ajudar a chegar ao próximo com os meus livros.

Ferramentas para o seu sucesso

Eu sei que encarar um desafio maior pode parecer assustador, mas você não estará sozinho! Para garantir que sua jornada seja divertida e eficaz, o livro vem recheado de ferramentas de apoio:
